The West Nile Virus and the dialysis/transplant patient.

چکیده
Viruses are microscopic particles that contain genetic information surrounded by a protein shell that protects the virus as it travels from cell to cell or from organism to organism. The protein shell also helps the virus develop its genetic information into the susceptible cell. A virus can only survive by living inside of the cells of another host organism. For this reason, some scientists do not consider viruses living things, since they cannot survive on their own. In the case of the West Nile Virus, individual virus particles are introduced into the bloodstream of a host through the bite of an infected mosquito. The virus then travels through the bloodstream to find a suitable cell in the body in which it can replicate. Successful replication creates many new virions that then return to the bloodstream and look for additional cells to enter and use to replicate (Sfakianos, 2005).

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borneagent that is maintained within a bird-mosquito cycle. In humansand equids, infection by this agent is usually asymptomatic, orcharacterized by a mild febrile illness. However, fatal meningoencephalitisor encephalitis may occur. OBJECTIVES:The aim ofthis study was to evaluate the prevalence of WNVinfection andcorrelation of this organism with h...

Abstract Background and Objective: West Nile virus (WNV) is a member of the genus Flavivirus that can cause viral infections in human. This study aimed at detecting IgG antibodies against WNV in patients of two cities of Neka and Shiraz. Material and Methods: the participants were 46 possible WNV case from Neka (13 women and 10 men) and Shiraz (10 women and 13 men). IgG assay was ...

Solid organ transplant patients are vulnerable to suffering neurologic complications from a wide array of viral infections and can be sentinels in the population who are first to get serious complications from emerging infections like the recent waves of arboviruses, including West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, Zika virus, and Dengue virus. The diverse and rapidly changing landscape of possibl...

sitive test. Of the patients with cases of West Nile virus identified in New York City in 1999 and 2000 and for whom a CSF sample was available, 95% had demonstrable IgM antibody (90% within 8 days of onset of symptoms) [4]. Residents in areas in which West Nile virus is endemic may have persistent IgM antibody from a previous infection that is unrelated to their current clinical illness, and, ...

Although West Nile fever is mild in the vast majority of infected persons, there is growing evidence that the disease may be more severe in the immunocompromised population. We describe 3 recipients of kidney or pancreas transplants who developed West Nile fever, 2 of whom had meningoencephalitis. As is the norm when treating serious infections in transplant recipients, a reduction of immunosup...
